Sheila Durkin Dierks
Sheila Durkin Dierks, author of WomenEucharist, is a struggling Catholic, often saddened and horrified by positions which the the Church hierarchy support, but also gladdened by the life journeys of parish members and the shared prayer of community. She believes in and works for a reformed church in community which will work to welcome and honor all people.
She has twelve years of Catholic education, including a BA from Rosary College, River Forest, Illinois. She did graduate work at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, and is working on a Master of Fine Arts degree at Colorado State University. A liturgical weaver, she owns The Weft Hand, a custom weaving company.
She has a lengthy history of working with people in struggle. Dierks was director of Harambee Children's Art Center, Milwaukee and founder and director of the first Mother's milk bank for critically ill infants in Kansas City. Subsequently, she co-founded Manna House, a long-term education residence for homeless women and their children. She worked on the liturgical commission for the diocese of Kansas City-St Joseph while teaching theology for Notre Dame de Sion there.
Being deeply aware of the lack of equal opportunity for women in the Catholic Church and the sharply decreased numbers of priests, Dierks founded WomenEucharist groups in New Jersey and Colorado. These groups gather for prayer and sacrament without an ordained presider, and work to find ways to pray and celebrate together.
Discovering that many other women were doing the same in other cities and small towns nationwide, she contacted more than thirty groups across the United States. Questionnaires, interviews and visits followed. The women's stories of their struggles, sorrows, and the joy of celebrating Eucharist with other women, are the heart of this book, WomenEucharist. Set in the context of these last four tumultuous decades for Catholic Women in the U.S., the book tells just how they have come to such a sacramental stage.
She is married and the mother of four, with a daughter and three sons.
